ULDS kindergarten registration slated
HANONVERTON--The United Local School District will host a parent orientation meeting at 6 p.m. March 12 in the elementary cafeteria for parents of children who will be 5 years old before Aug. 1 and live in the United Local School District or are considering open enrollment. At the meeting, registration packets will be handed out and other information will be shared to help with enrolling new kindergarteners and getting them off to a successful start.
Also at the meeting, appointments will be scheduled for March 20, 21 or 22, when packets can be returned and students will be screened. Documents that will need to be gathered are the child's birth certificate, social security card, immunization records, custody documents (if applicable), a photo I.D. and two proofs of residency which will be presented along with the completed registration packet on the scheduled screening date.
Those planning to open enroll a child should visit the district's central office after April 1 to pick up an open enrollment application. Open enrolling families will need to register with their home school district first, and then they may apply with United Local.

CCAFCS offering $200 scholarship
SALEM--The Columbiana County Association of Family and Consumer Sciences is offering to students residing in Columbiana County or a bordering county (Mahoning, Jefferson, Stark or Carroll) a $200 scholarship is available for a college junior or senior majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences or Home Economics or a related field such as dietetics, nutrition, child development, housing, culinary arts or interior design. A student who has completed half of a two-year program in this field or completing post graduate work may also apply.

SCC to provide
baseball league
SALEM --The Salem Community Center will offer an instructional baseball league each Monday from March 12 through April 2. There are leagues for children ages 4 to 8. Cost is $30 per participant, plus $15 for uniforms if needed. For information call 330-332-5885.
WR Knitting Guild to meet March 13
CANFIELD-- The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet at 7 p.m. March 13 at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. The program for the evening will be a demonstration of several techniques and stitches.

Fish Fry planned
in Berlin Center
BERLIN CENTER--Boy Scout Troop 71 will host its 54th annual Good Friday "All You Can Eat Fish" Dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. March 30 at at Western Reserve High School, 13850 W. Akron-Canfield Road (state Route 224) (in the old building behind the new school).
The meal will be prepared and served by the members of the troop. Cost is $12 for adults, $6 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children ages 5 and under. Dessert is limited to one per person. Carryouts will be available.
Troop 71 chartered by VFW Post 9571 meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday (except for fourth) at the Post 9571 VFW Hall, 11397 Ellsworth Road in Ellsworth. For information about the troop and its activities, contact Scoutmaster Mike Smith at 330-277-6967.
WRLSD to register kindergarten class
BERLIN CENTER--Western Reserve Local School District will hold 2018-2019 kindergarten registration and screening for children who will be 5 on or before Aug. 1 and a resident of the district from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 13 and 14 at the Reserve Building.

Triple Play to sing at Salem library
SALEM--The Salem Public Library will host Triple Play as part of its A Little Live Music series at 2 p.m. March 18.
Triple Play is comprised of Betty Schultz, Alice Cooley and Leann Rich who share their musical talents with numerous bands and symphonies.
Shultz is a retired band director of public and parochial schools. She has taught private lessons for over 30 years and is adjunct faculty in the music department at the University of Mount Union in Alliance. She plays the oboe in the Alliance Symphony, Salem Quaker City Band and recitals at Mount Union.
Cooley is a retired elementary music teacher from Austintown. She taught private flute lessons for over 30 years and now plays in the Canfield Community Band.
Rich coordinates the marketing and public relations for the Mahoning Valley Historical Society in Youngstown. She plays oboe with the Alliance Symphony, the Canfield Community Band, the Greenville Symphony Orchestra and the Youngstown Scoring Stage.
The A Little Live Music series is open to the public and free of cost. Performances are held the third Sunday of each month the library has Sunday hours.
Predator, prey event set in Salem
SALEM--"What's for Dinner?," a video-conference program to be presented by Stark Parks of Stark County as part of the Salem Go Wild in the Park program, will be held at 6:30 p.m. March 19 in the Salem Public Library Quaker Room. The program will explain the difference between predator and prey and the ways animals adapt to the dangers that they face.

lifeguard training
SALEM--The Salem Community Center will be offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course from 5 to 8 p.m. weeknights April 9 through 20. Cost is $220 for members and $260 for non-members. Upon completion participants will receive Lifeguard Training, First Aid, Professional Rescuer CPR and AED Essentials certifications. Fake news program set at Salem library
SALEM--A program about the fake news phenomenon and how to avoid falling victim will be presented by Salem Public Library Director Brad Stephens at 6:30 p.m. March 20 and 2 p.m. April 17 in the Salem Public Library Quaker Room.

Colorectal cancer seminar at SRMC
SALEM--The Salem Regional Medical Center will host a free educational seminar, "Understanding Colorectal Cancer," at 6:30 p.m. March 20 in the Tower Conference Room, presented by board-certified general surgeon William S. Lee, M.D., FACS.
During the seminar, Lee will discuss the risk factors for colorectal cancer, its symptoms, the importance of regular screening and current treatment options. Doors to the event will open at 6 p.m. so that attendees can view educational displays. Light refreshments will be served.
